Leading Through Change: Creating Excitement and Possibility This Fall
September 02, 2026

As summer begins to wind down and we look toward fall, there is often a noticeable shift in energy. Teams return from vacations, priorities become clearer, new initiatives gain momentum, and organizations begin looking ahead to what remains to be accomplished before year-end.
For leaders, fall can bring a renewed sense of possibility and excitement. It can also bring change.
New strategies, shifting priorities, organizational restructuring, new team members, evolving expectations, and competing demands can all create uncertainty. The challenge for leaders is not simply to manage these changes—it is to help people move through change with confidence, curiosity, and purpose.
Why Excitement Matters During Change
Change is often discussed in terms of resistance, uncertainty, or stress. But change can also create energy.
Excitement can help people see opportunities rather than simply focus on what they may be losing. When leaders recognize and intentionally harness that energy, they can help their teams:
- Embrace new possibilities
- Build confidence in their ability to adapt
- Stay engaged through uncertainty
- Approach challenges with curiosity
- Connect change to a meaningful purpose
The leader’s role is not to manufacture excitement or pretend that change is easy. It is to create the conditions where people can acknowledge what is challenging while also seeing what is possible.
Leading With Energy and Intention
As you enter the fall, consider how you are showing up for your team.
Start with your own emotional awareness.
Leaders set the emotional tone for their teams. Take time to notice your own
reactions to the changes ahead. Are you energized? Concerned? Impatient?
Uncertain? Your emotional state can influence how others experience change,
particularly when they are looking to you for direction.
Create space for both excitement and uncertainty.
Not everyone will experience change in the same way. Some people may be
energized by new possibilities, while others may need more time to process what
is changing. Effective leaders make room for both perspectives rather than
assuming everyone is ready to move forward at the same pace.
Connect change to purpose.
People are more likely to engage with change when they understand why it
matters. Help your team connect new priorities and initiatives to the bigger
picture. What are you trying to accomplish? Why does it matter? What
opportunities does this create?
Focus on what you can influence.
Change can become overwhelming when people focus on everything outside their
control. Help your team identify where they have influence and where they can
take action. Moving from “What is happening to us?” to “What can we
do with this?” can create a powerful shift in perspective.
Use curiosity to move forward.
Instead of having all the answers, ask better questions. What could this change
make possible? What might we need to do differently? What are we learning?
Curiosity can help teams move from uncertainty toward exploration and action.
Make This Fall a Season of Possibility
The return to work after summer can feel like a reset—a natural opportunity to pause, reconnect, and consider what comes next.
Rather than simply asking, “How will we manage all of this change?”, consider asking:
“What could become possible because of this change?”
That shift in perspective can influence how you communicate, how your team responds, and ultimately how successfully you move forward together.
This fall, don’t just manage the change ahead. Help your people see what is possible.
